The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust Established in 1932 by Sir Dorabji Tata

Overview

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Allied Trusts have pioneered several leading institutions with endowment grants – the first of their kind in India – and in doing so have created many centres of excellence leaving an indelible mark in several fields particularly in medicine, science and education.

In the recent past, the Trusts have also helped in establishing newer institutes with the idea of tackling emerging problems such as the Sir Dorabji Tata Centre for Research in Tropical Diseases at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the JRD Tata Ecotechnology Centre in Chennai.

In the last few years, three significant Tata-Trust promoted institutions include the creation of the Rural Campus by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences at Tuljapaur, the setting up of the Tata Medical Centre Hospital in Kolkata to help cancer patients from the East and North-East and the Indian Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine in Bangalore.

Even as most of these institutions have now been handed over to the respective state or central governments for day-to-day administration, the Trusts continue to support and nurture them in myriad ways and they continue to receive program and recurring grants for specific purposes from the Trusts.

The Tata Agricultural and Rural Training Centre for the Blind (TACEB), Phansa, in Gujarat, India, is not just a Centre for vocational training to sightless students.

National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore, is a concept mooted by the late JRD Tata, who visualized an institution to conduct advanced research in multidisciplinary areas and serve as a forum to bring together administrators and managers from the industry
