The Jamsetji Tata National Virtual Academy for Rural Prosperity (NVA) supported by the Tata Education Trust was established in 2004. The main aim of the NVA is to bring together experts and grassroots level communities in a two-way communication with the objective that knowledge should reach every home and hut. In keeping with this objective, the Mission 2007 initiative aims at extending the benefits of ICT to all the 600,000 villages in India by 2007. Starting with Maharashtra, the project envisages the creation of Village Resource Centres (VRCs) and Village Knowledge Centres (VKCs) in order to understand and solve the various agricultural and operational problems of villagers in rural India.

This new project initiative is an extension of the objectives of Mission 2007, to be carried out in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It envisages the creation of VRCs and VKCs that have been found to be very successful in the context of Tamil Nadu. This concept emphasizes the need to expand the scope of VRCs to such agriculturally-stressed zones of India as the Vidarbha region, where the NVA is working with partners.
