The JRD Tata Ecotechnology Centre at MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai plans to direct its Rs 46.70 million grant from the Jamsetji Tata Trust to reach out to and meet the needs of those affected by the Tsunami of December 2004 in the regions of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and adjoining coastal areas. To that effect, the Centre is planning to establish three facilities.
 
» The SHG Capacity Building and Mentoring Centre at Pilayarkuppum
» A ‘Fish-for-All Training’ Centre for the Tsunami-affected areas
» A Fish Pre-Processing Centre
 
Having recognized both the potential to upgrade the quality of life as well as the Industry standards, the SHG Capacity Building and Mentoring Centre, the Fish-for-All Training Centre and the Fish Pre-Processing Centre can contribute to the consolidated transformation of the coastal economy through adequate capacity building of the communities dependent on fishery as a livelihood source in the region. These centres will also be instrumental in raising the fishery initiatives up to the Industry standards which will indirectly improve the returns to these communities.
