The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has decided to put its experience of five decades in disaster interventions to contribute in a more organized and integrated manner through the creation of an independent Centre for Disaster Management (CDM). The Centre is being set up by a grant of Rs 118.96 million from the Jamsetji Tata Trust.

The CDM will start at the level of conceptualization and will work its way towards rooting several aspects of prevention and preparedness in disaster management systems. The CDM will then move on to laying the ground for people-sensitive, accountable and effective mechanisms for disaster response that will meet international standards.

The CDM will also serve as a facility for teaching and research and will relate to all the Schools in the Institute. The CDM’s central role will be to create a strong cadre of disaster management professionals and institutions across the country that will provide research, policy and program leadership, and work with diverse groups in disaster prevention, preparedness and response.
