India’s purchasing power makes it the world’s fourth biggest economy, but an inordinately large number of people still lack access to basic services such as health, education, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities – without which they cannot be empowered to claim their share in the benefits of growth. The percentage of people living below the poverty line is reducing but at a modest pace. With our population being largely young, optimism for the future sits uncomfortably with growing impatience. In this context, the challenge for contemporary philanthropic foundations is to keep pace with the changing needs of the population, while addressing the needs of the most marginalized. In 2005-2006, the Trust has disbursed Rs 793.97 million (US $ 17.64 million) with significant grants made across the social spectrum
