“What distinguishes a Trust is not its ability to give or the extent or range of its giving but the character of its giving. It is important for a Trust to maintain its ‘pioneering’ character and this can only be done adequately where from time to time a Trust initiates and fosters new institutions and new types of service to society.”

Professor Rustom Choksi
Former Director
Sir Dorabji Tata Trust

Mr Rudolph Giuliani, the former mayor of New York was invited by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust to deliver the 15th Sir Dorab Tata Memorial Lecture in Mumbai on Wednesday, 22nd February 2006 at the Tata Theatre, NCPA at 6 pm.

The theme of Mr Giuliani's keynote address was 'Principles of Leadership', which have been his guideposts throughout his career including his tenure as the 107th Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001. Under his leadership, New York City went from being known as "ungovernable and unmanageable" to being an international symbol of urban renaissance. And on September 11, 2001, when he was faced with one of the toughest challenges, Giuliani emerged as America's steadiest hand, leading the city and the nation through the worst domestic disaster in our history.

In his speech, Giuliani outlined some of the leadership practices he adopted which can be used successfully by anyone in any and every situation. Whether dealing with a catastrophe or handling complicated people-related issues or assembling a brilliant team, Giuliani has relied on a systematic and methodical approach that can work for any manager. 'Leadership', according to Giuliani works both ways — it is a privilege which carries with it responsibility — from imposing a structure suitable to an organisation's purpose, to forming a team of people who bring out the best in each other or to taking calculated risks.

Giuliani enunciated his six principles of leadership namely, a strong set of beliefs, being an optimist, working with courage, being prepared, communicating effectively and lastly encouraging team work.
