The poor state of the public health systems in the country has resulted in little or no access to primary health care for a large number of people in the country. The situation is further compounded by the failure of health programs both public and private to effectively target the most vulnerable groups, that of women and children and tribal and rural communities.
In order to address these concerns in an integrated and holistic manner, the Trust’s work focuses on the following areas |
| » |
Engaging in the community health approach. The community health approach is comprehensive and aims to address the health needs of the people, using multi-sectoral interventions, particularly at the grassroots. |
| » |
Supporting projects, which engage in the development of direct care, infrastructure and scientific research. |
| » |
Working in the field of women’s health and mental health using a gender and rights-based approach. |
| » |
Supporting the application of modern scientific methods in raising the status and ensuring the survival of local health traditions. |
| |
Though the majority of health projects are located in Maharashtra and in the surrounding states of Gujarat and Karnataka, the Trust’s future work seeks to correct the regional imbalance and commence work in the poorer BIMAROU states. In addition, in keeping with the Strategy Paper for Health and the subsequent review of the portfolio against the strategic framework, the Trust’s work will focus on renewing priorities in community health and health policy research. |
