One of the unique features of the State is that a large majority of the tribal population in Meghalaya follows a matrilineal system where lineage and inheritance are traced through women. The Khasi-Jaintia tribesmen follow the traditional matrilineal norm, wherein the ‘Ka Khadduh’ (or the youngest daughter) inherits all the property and acts as the caretaker of aged parents and any unmarried siblings. However, the male line, particularly the mother’s brother, may indirectly control the ancestral property since he may be involved in important decisions relating to property including its sale and disposal.

Meghalaya well known as 'abode of the clouds’ is a source of inspiration to any poet, a dramatic canvas for an artist's dream, and the ideal retreat for people in search of beauty and solitude. The name Meghalaya describes the climatic phenomenon that brings torrents of rain to its mountainous terrain. The areas of ‘Mawsynram’ and ‘Cherrapunjee’ which receive some of the heaviest rainfall in the world are found here. This hilly state has been called ‘a patch of beauty and grace’ and is famed as 'the Scotland of the East'. It is linked to the Borail Range , an offshoot of the Himalayan Mountains . The refreshing mountain air, the whispering pines, the exotic flora and fauna, the caves – all present a tremendous taste of beauty.
