| Status of Children in Goa -- An Assessment Report 2007 is a publication brought out by the Goa Initiative for Mainstreaming Child Rights (GIMCR) with contributions from an Assessment Group of 24 persons, each of whom is actively involved in child rights issues. In this report an attempt has been made to assess the status of children in Goa, with a view to preparing a plan of action for the mainstreaming of child rights in different sectors of society.
Goa has made a great deal of progress as far as child rights are concerned. It enacted the Goa Children’s Act in 2003 and is the first state to have a Children’s Court and a State Commission for Children. But there is still a tendency to view children’s rights as a matter to be taken care of exclusively by NGOs and the government departments of education and of women and child development.
GIMCR is a multi-sectoral initiative launched in March 2006, supported by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, to take the issue of child rights to all sectors of the state and civil society. After carrying out an assessment of the status of children in Goa (reflected in this report), a 15-day ‘Training of Trainers’ program was conducted in collaboration with the Goa Department for Women and Child Development and the VM Salgaocar Law College. This was attended by professionals from the government, the private and the voluntary sectors, enabling them to continue child rights training programs in their own areas of work.
This project was supported by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust through funding to Vikas Adhyayan Kendra and implemented by Children's Rights in Goa.
